It’s called Community Shop and it is UK’s fist social supermarket, aimed at helping people on the cusp of food poverty.
A pilot project, it has just opened in Goldthorpe, a deprived area in South Yorkshire, and aims, if successful, to replicate all over the country.
As reported by The Guardian, the new social supermarket will offer shoppers the chance to buy food and drinks with a 70% discount. It will only sell surplus food, such as food with close expiration date, damaged packaging or incorrect labeling. Stock will be supplied from major chains such as Asda, Marks & Spencer and Morrisons which would otherwise be thrown away.
In order to avoid anyone being able to exploit the possibility to get food at very low prices, membership is guaranteed to people living within a certain post code who also get welfare support.
This new social supermarket is not only about buying cheap food: it offers programmes of financial and social support, such as debt management , cooking skills and home budgeting.
