In April 2006, leaders of Ukrainian Business circles joined the UN Global Compact, committing themselves to apply the principles of business social responsibility.
The Global Compact was initiated in 1999 through the General Secretary of the UN in order to obligate global business to include standards of human rights, labour rights, anti-corruption and ecology into their business strategies. Francis Martin O’Donelli, the UN co-ordinator in Ukraine, stressed that worldwide more than 3000 business companies have joined the Global Compact so far and that also in Ukraine there are a lot of supporters of this system among business corporations.
Boris Tarasyuk, the Minister of Foreign Affairs of Ukraine mentioned that, on the background of the Chernobyl tragedy, the Global Compact’s principles for the defense of ecology and for the protection of human health is of extreme importance for Ukraine’s future.
