UK: Third sector advisory body members appointed

Phil Hope, Minister for the Third Sector, has appointed the panel of the new Third Sector Advisory Body (TSAB). The new panel members bring experience from the third sector and beyond. TSAB has been set up to provide ministers with clear and authoritative advice on policy regarding the third sector, including charities, voluntary groups and social enterprises.

Phil Hope, Minister for the Third Sector, said: ‘The advisory body has a hugely important role in helping the Government make the right choices for a thriving third sector. I am confident their expertise experience and authority will prove invaluable in our drive to support the third sector and the increasingly important part it plays in society.’

Baroness Jill Pitkeathley, OBE who was appointed as the chair of TSAB on 9th April, said: ‘I’m delighted with these appointments. Their range of experience and backgrounds will ensure a robust advisory body that won’t be afraid to talk straight. We will start work as soon as possible to ensure that the third sector’s interests are put at the heart of policy making.’

The Third Sector Advisory Body was a commitment of the Third Sector Review published in 2007. The appointments will be until March 2011. The positions have a remuneration of £250 per day for an estimated 15 days per year. These appointments have been made in accordance with the OCPA Code of Practice. All appointments are made on merit and political activity plays no part in the selection process. However, in accordance with the original Nolan recommendations there is a requirement for appointees’ political activity (if declared) to be made public. Stan Crawford was an elected Member of Newark and Sherwood District Council and is still a member of Ollerton and Boughton Parish Council. John Knight has supported his local Labour Party parliamentary candidate in 2001. Abbie Rumbold has declared membership of and relevant activity with the Labour party. No other appointee declared political activity.
