The awards celebrate excellence in social enterprise, otherwise known as business with a socially beneficial purpose.

Supported by Edge, an educational foundation promoting practical and vocational learning, and the New Statesman, this year?s awards focus on the people and training that drive the sector.

Ed Miliband MP, Minister for the Cabinet Office, who presented the awards, said: "Once people see what social enterprise can achieve, they understand it and become passionate about its success. This year's Edge Upstart winners showcase social enterprise at its inspiring best – from ethical fashion design that challenges private sector competitors, to bringing marginalised communities closer together. All the nominees are living proof of how enterprising ambition and a commitment to social justice can change lives and livelihoods for the better, and I celebrate their success.?

The winners included 26 year old Tom Savage, who won the Young Social Entrepreneur award in recognition of the social enterprises he?s established ? including an eco-tourism travel agency ? and his work in the sector. The title of Social Enterprise of Year was awarded to Belu Water ? the first bottled water company that doesn?t contribute to climate change. The company designed the UK?s first biodegradable and compost-suitable bottle made from corn.
