Towards a sustainable development: Carbon Expo, May 2009, Barcelona
The Spanish city will host the world’s leading trade fair and conference on new environmental technologies and policies

With a carbon market worth more than US$120 billion, developing countries are looking to CARBON EXPO as a platform to showcase their greenhouse gas reduction projects. CARBON EXPO 2009, the world’s leading Trade Fair and Conference for emissions trading, carbon abatement solutions and new technologies, is jointly organised by The World Bank, the International Emissions Trading Association (IETA), Fira Barcelona and Koelnmesse, and will take place from May 27th to 29th in Barcelona, Spain.
“Since its inception in 2004, CARBON EXPO has been THE annual milestone for supply side players involved in fostering and promoting the CDM (Clean Development Mechanism)/JI (Joint Implementation mechanism) markets across countries and regions,” said Martha Castillo, former Head of the Colombian Climate Change Mitigation Office and current Senior Carbon Finance Specialist at the Andean Development Bank, CAF. “CARBON EXPO has consistently provided national CDM agencies, investment promotion offices, local project developers and buyers from around the world with a premier forum for knowledge sharing on carbon policy and practice, and an effective marketplace for carbon business solutions. We are looking forward to use this global hub to the carbon market networks again,” Castillo added, “especially in this critical year when it is most important to have a good understanding of the market and its perspectives.”
Despite the impact of the financial crisis and the uncertainty around the post-2012 carbon market, the carbon market is expected to grow by more than 20% in 2009. CARBON EXPO 2009 will showcase developing country projects under the CDM and discuss opportunities in the CDM market and in the post-2012 world that could see carbon finance moving into programs and sectors-scaling up from individual projects to sector-wide, programmatic interventions, like energy efficiency, transportation and creating urban carbon assets.
“Apart from the market opportunities for developing countries, CARBON EXPO ’09 will set the scene for constructive discussion about the lessons learned from the carbon markets and particularly from the CDM,” said Luis Santos from the Ministry of Environment of Uruguay. “We will meet at the end of this year in Copenhagen to discuss the future of the current climate change regime. This Trade Fair will help us prepare. The ’09 conference and workshops will let us listen to the different views from governments, regulators and private sector representatives, both from developed and developing countries.”
The Fair will also explore broadening carbon finance in developing countries beyond the sector of land use, land-use change and forestry, to the possibilities that will exist in reducing emissions from deforestation and forest degradation.
“As in previous years, the World Bank will sponsor delegations from more than 60 developing countries and countries with economies in transition to attend CARBON EXPO in Barcelona and participate in the Expo’s regional pavilions, side events and panel discussions,” said Konrad von Ritter, Manager at the World Bank Institute. “It is one way in which the World Bank is actively helping developing countries to explore CDM opportunities. This is where the real business of selling emission reductions can happen under one roof and it is the one-stop shop concept that makes this platform a critical meeting place for both buyers and sellers of greenhouse gas emission reductions from around the world.”
With over 250 speakers, the Conference Programme will be articulated around nine high level plenary sessions, 28 interactive workshops and 55 exhibitor side events. Now in its 6th edition, this international Trade Fair & Conference will gather over the three days 3,500 participants from 120 countries, around 300 exhibitors and over 200 accredited journalists from more than 30 countries.
