“To shake the world awake”. This was how one of the One Billion Rising supporters explained on Twitter why she’d decided to take part in Eve Ensler’s latest campaign to stop violence against women.
Ensler, a rape survivor herself, founded
V-Day, a global
activist movement to raise awareness on
women’s rights, after she saw the impact her breakout play,
The Vagina Monologues, had on the audience.
Launched on Monday with a short film written by Eve Ensler, One Billion Rising wants to activate women and men across the world to join a global, peaceful , protest on V-Day’s 15th anniversary, on 14 february 2013. The campaign aims to get 1 billion people to go on strike, take the streets , dance, rise up and demand an end to gender violence.
According to the UN violence affects 70% of women around the globe. Domestic violence is the leading cause of death for women aged 15 to 44.
The campaign has already been endorsed by the main international women’s organizations, celebrities, opinion leaders and thousands of activists across the world. “Of course naysayers will suggest it will change nothing, violence against the physically weaker sex will continue.” Wrote Jane Martinson on the
Guardian, “But surely creating a talking point, discussing the issue and celebrating our own physical power is better than doing nothing.” We couldn’t agree more.
