Spain: Stop to diggers in the island of Eivissa

A judge stops the motorways works due to suspicions of malpractice in expropiations

In Eivissa the regional government has recently planned to build a network of motorways which has been contested for part of the inhabitants of the island for several weeks. A demonstration gathered around 20,000 people. But now the works have been stopped, although for the moment only on a temporary basis, due to suspicions of malpractice in expropiations. The total number of expropiations is calculated to be around 100. Whilst for the regional government the project would not have serious effects on the ecosystem, those against it, organised around a Platform gathering all left-wing parties and a great number of environment-friendly and civic organisations, have stated that the project could mean the definitive ruin of the few rustic areas and of the areas with a certain natural value still existing in the island. The Platform also considers that the only way is to optimise and improve the current network of roads and to avoid any unnecessary and disproportionate enlargements.
