In two months time Spain will pass a bill that will allow purified waters to be re-used and that will triple the country's capacity to purify water by 2015, say sources from the Spanish Ministry of the Environment.
At present, out of every 3,400 cubic hectometres of purified water between 400 and 450 cubic hectometres are put to use again. This amount is expected to increase to 1,200 by 2015.
Using purified water is a means of obtaining a non-conventional water resource that allows saving better quality water for other purposes. The bill sets up the legal mechanisms to allow using purified sewage as an alternative water resource while at the same time promoting new reutilisation plans for a more efficient use of water.
The bill defines the concept of reutilisation, introduces the concept of regenerated waters, establishes the necessary requirements for undertaking the reutilisation of regenerated waters and even includes provisions related to the uses regenerated waters can be given, as well as quality criteria.
