Spain: Pagesos Solidaris in Colombia

The Foundation for co-development-related missions takes roots in Colombia

di Ges

?Pagesos Solidaris?, a Foundation created by the Catalan agricultural trade union ?Unió de Pagesos? for co-development-related missions, is about to open a branch in Bogotà, which will make it easier for Pagesos Solidaris to continue supporting those Colombian casual workers who had worked as farmers in Catalonia and have decided to start up a project of their own in their communities of origin. This branch will carry out an on-the-spot work directly counselling the farmers. Two of the projects which Pagesos Solidaris have contributed are already self-sufficient, that is, to do not need any other external support. One of these projects involves milk collection from around forty small farmers whose standard of living has improved since this joint management. The other project, also located in the region of Guasca, involved the creation of a co-operative by casual workers who had worked in Catalonia, which has specialised in the commercialisation and transformation of a local fruit called ?uchuva?. In another Colombian region, Chocó, one of the most unprivileged areas of the country, a co-operative called ?Cocoagricho? is attempting to set up a network to commercialise another local product, the ?borojó?, which is similar to a pomegranate, and had never been consumed beyond producer units.
