Spain: joint actions to preserve biodiversity
A Ministry of the Environment and Spanish Federation of Municipalities and Provinces initiative
di Ges
These joint actions aimed at preserving and increasing biological diversity all over Spain arise from an agreement that both institutions signed last October that will be managed by a new network of cities and municipalities for biodiversity that is expected to be in operation in the first half of 2007. This agreement will also lead to the development of a system of indicators on the natural heritage and local biodiversity, as well as on the sustainable use of natural resources. It will also facilitate the dissemination at the local level of national and international initiatives with similar objectives, the creation of a forum for the exchange of experiences, the training of specialised staff in the preservation of biodiversity and in the sustainable use of natural resources and the joint launch of awareness-raising actions addressed to local authorities and citizens. Its ultimate aim is achieving a balanced consideration of social, economic and environmental issues and a net increase in biodiversity.
