Spain: A protestation day to save mountains
The network RedMontañas is organising a protestation day on the next 21th of May for the Chart of Mountains to be finally approved in view of the urgent need to protect all the Spanish mountains

Four years ago, on May 2002, the Spanish Ministry of the Environment submitted the draft version of the Chart of Mountains which has not been approved yet, despite the fact that on June 2005 the Spanish Parliament urged the Government its adoption and to take measures with a view to put it in practice. The network ?RedMontañas? is organising a protestation day on the next 21th of May for the Chart to be finally approved in view of the urgent need to protect all the Spanish mountains, which are facing with varied aggressions such as urban development and the construction or enlargement of ski resorts. The Chart could be an antidote for this unsustainable model and the reference tool for a conservative and well-balanced management of all mountainous areas. The main aim of the protestation day is to explain at the local level what the Chart is and how it could contribute to find tailored solutions for local development and the welfare of the inhabitants of these areas. After the protestation day, a press conference will be held in Madrid to call for the approval of the Chart in addition to an interview with the Spanish Minister of the Environment.
