Russia: Greenpeace demands energy saving

Greenpeace volunteers‘ Eco-patrol claims energy-saving measures in Moscow and St. Petersburg for big firms and public institutions

di Stefanie Schiffer

On June 5th – the international day of ecology ? Greenpeace Russia installed in ist Moscow office a system of automatic electicity regulation and publicly claimed that huge Russian firms and Russian state institutions and ministries should do so as well. By doing that they could significantly contribute to save energy and to minimise the ecological problems of the country. In autumn/winter 2005 a patrol of Greenpeace energy-volunteers moniored the use of energy in huge private firms and in state insitutions and ministries in the both biggest cities of Russia. They revealed that only in Moscow there is a potential of 12-14% (1,5 Gigawatt) of energy-reduction if appropriate automatic regulation systems would be installed in offices and enterprises. Advertisement companies, the Moscow Metro, telecommunication firms like Bi-line and Megafon and the City Hall of Moscow have been the first to receive the proposal from Greenpeace to introduce the installment of energy saving systems. ?Theses systems would guarantee that advertisement, public lighting and office illumination would only be switched on if there is a real need in it.? confirms Vladimir Cuprov ? head of the department on energy at Greenpeace Moscow. www.greenpeace.org
