VitaEurope wants to keep you company until Christmas and remind you of all the beautiful things you can do to make the last bit of 2011 useful, fun, sustainable and unforgettable.

We have prepared a special advent calendar  for you. Everyday we’ll suggest a simple action you can take which will improve your life as well as the world around you. What are you waiting for?

Think about the impact of your web-surfing

Every time you surf the web you activate a network of hardware and software servers, often located hundreds of kilometres from your computer, that bounce your queries from routers to modems to servers until the desired webpage has been found. This is great for your productivity, but have you ever wondered what it means for the environment?

The kind of hardware used by the world wide web in the past tended to cram as much processing power into as little space as possible with little regard for the amount of energy it took to power or cool. Thankfully technology companies are not immune to all that which pushes for using less energy and creating less waste, not least because it also means spending less. But this doesn’t mean that we shouldn’t wonder about the kind of energy used to power our internet searches.

Here are a couple of links to help you in your quest to become a more energy efficient web surfer:

Find out how Google does it.

Consider hosting your website with a green hosting service like GreenGeeks, which is considered to be the world’s most eco friendly web hosting company.

And don’t forget to make sure that any electronic equipment you buy is Greenpeace-proof.
