CARE annual conference

Social Platform is organizing the annual conference on Care.

The membership of Social Platform consists of organisations that represent service users such as older people, people with disabilities, children and families and service providers, dealing also with employment issues in Care.

Social Platform’s members continuously face challenges, which undermine the respect of the rights, the well being and the quality of life of both people in need of Care and of professional or informal carers, or can decrease the quality of Care services.

The aim of the conference is to establish a common foundation for Care that ensures the rights, responsibilities, dignity and empowerment of both Care receivers and Care givers, and strengthens social inclusion.

The conference will also identify the main challenges and opportunities in receiving and providing Care and examine what can be done to improve the existing environments on which Care is built, from a social, legislative, economic and financial point of view. Against the backdrop of the European Year for Combating Poverty and Social Exclusion, it is vital to consider how Care, provided effectively and with universal access to services, ensures social cohesion and inclusion.

The conference will showcase a selection of innovative responses in Care practices and policies, arising from Social Platform members’ experiences.

Driving the Transition to Sustainable Transport

Transport is the engine of economic growth and increases the standard of living all around the globe. A major challenge for users and providers of transport is to maintain the many benefits of mobility and transportation, while mitigating the impact on the environment and reducing CO2 emissions.

This year’s ACEA Annual Transport Policy Event will focus on the transition to sustainable transport; a process that is taking place right now and that needs to be continuously further reinforced. The European commercial vehicle manufacturers are “drivers” of the transition, and they actively engage in the on-going strategic policy debate on this important topic that is taking place in the EU and abroad.

How to increase transport efficiency and optimise logistics? How to stimulate the introduction of new technologies? What are ways to fairly assess road freight transport carbon emissions? What should the European Commission’s White Paper on Transport Policy bring to the equation? These and other questions will be addressed during the ACEA conference.

20 November 2010, Universal Children’s Day

After the UN Convention on the Rights of the Child was adopted in 1989, the UN General Assembly recommended that all countries choose a day to promote children’s welfare. Although observance of the day varies from country to country, the Government of Canada designated November 20th as National Child Day, to commemorate the day on which both the Declaration on the Rights of the Child (1959) and the Convention on the Rights of the Child (1989) were adopted.

The UN Convention on the Rights of the Child addresses the rights of children and youth under the age of 18. It recognizes their basic human rights and gives them additional rights to protect them from harm. The Convention’s 54 articles cover everything from a child’s right to be free from exploitation, to the right to his or her own opinion and the right to education, health care, and economic opportunity.

The adoption of the Convention on the Rights of the Child and the creation of Universal Children’s Day reflects the growing recognition that children are important and valued members of society, now and in the future. Universal Children’s Day celebrates children just for being themselves. It reminds us that children need love and respect to grow to their full potential. It is a day to listen to children, to marvel at their uniqueness and all they have to offer.

A key objective of Universal Children’s Day is to increase awareness of the Convention on the Rights of the Child. Since its adoption by the United Nations, the Convention has been signed or ratified by more countries than any other international treaty. Over the past decade, the Convention has proven to be a valuable tool for promoting the rights of children everywhere around the world.
