Am I a brain washer?
Today I spoke at the NGOs’ days organised by the Croatian government in Zagreb. What an experience!
It was my first time and we know, the first time is always painful.
My speech was on leadership, networks and networking. I changed approach at the last minute. Instead of giving a speech with a power point presentation I interviewed delegates on the topics.
The audience was lively and took part in my improvisation. Many enjoyed it but a woman in the front row accused me of being a brain washer and distracting them from the real issues with my marketing techniques.
Is networking a waste of time? You might think so but if you do, you will waste opportunities. The third sector requires a high dose of partnership. Who has ever saved the world on their own? Networking is the backbone of your partnerships. If you don’t do it you remain isolated. You ideas and achievements won’t be shared and multiplied. You might be happy and satisfied but your impact will be limited to your little corner.
Michael, an American friend and veteran in the Balkans, came to save me. He made a good point: we need networks and networking is the way to build them.
Networks are not just a vehicle of information but act as an interface between donors and practitioners in the field. Donors need to identify reliable recipients who guarantee that they make the best use of their money. Practioners in the field require funding but can’t spend all their time fundraising. Networks can match the needs of both parties. So, don’t waste this opportunity.
