Latvia: minorities for second language positions

The Latvian Association of Russian Language and Literature Teachers and the Latvian Association for Support of Russian Language Schools held also a conference ?Formation of the Russian Cultural-Linguistic Identity and Bilingual Education in Latvia? from 14 to 16 December in Riga. Participants of the conference shared their experiences on bilingual education and discussed the aims and opportunities of bilingual education in Latvia. During the conference Russian NGOs have developed proposals on schools of ethnic minorities and forwarded them to the Saeima. The NGOs believe that minority school students should have choice over the language of examinations. The proposals also include formation of a specific department dealing with ethnic minority schools under the auspices of the Ministry of Education and Science. More info at www.im.gov.lv
