Since the recovery of independence Latvia gradually comes closer to the group of more developed countries. During the last years Latvia has accumulated remarkable experience in the field of environmental protection, for example it has: coordinated normative documentation with EU requirements, taken part in different projects of experience exchange in Latvia and abroad, and received mentionable help from developed European countries. Now it?s time for Latvia to contribute in sustainable development process and improvement of environment condition of less developed countries. On joining the EU, one of the Latvian foreign policy courses was to help to developing countries within the field of environmental protection. CIS and countries of the Balkans are declared as priority countries in the Cooperation development strategy of the Republic of Latvia. It is necessary to stimulate the coordination and planning of the cooperation, as well as to provide expert introduction visits to the countries of the cooperation as well as to promote the accomplishment of the higher mentioned agreement. During the project the support to Belarus, Ukraine, Moldova, Georgia and Serbia will be offered. The aim of this project is to explore the environmental problems of these countries and to create a base for further cooperation in solving environmental problems. With this kind of project Latvia will promote the enforcement of international requirements of environmental protection and help to ensure sustainable development and will contribute in the sustainable development of less developed countries.
