Environmental groups will gather outside the European Parliament on Tuesday to all on politicians to adopt ambitious climate policies, including a moratorium on the construction of over 50 new coal plants across Europe

Background information
On 7 October the European Parliament environment committee will cast its vote on greenhouse gas reduction targets for EU countries, the Emissions Trading Scheme and other issues, including a proposal to impose a cap on CO2 emissions from power plants.
We need Europe to take the lead in fighting climate change and to reduce its domestic greenhouse gas emissions by at least 30% by 2020 (www.timetolead.eu). But energy companies are planning to build more and more coal-fired plants, which could make this target unattainable. Every new coal plant will annually emit as much CO2 as the yearly emissions of two million average cars. Power plants already produce 39% of total CO2 emissions in Europe – and coal is responsible for three-quarters of that total.
Environmental groups will ask members of Parliament to vote for an effective emissions trading programme, ambitious CO2 targets and a moratorium on the construction of coal plants.
