Japan: Canon not harpoons to shoot whales, say Greenpeace
Greenpeace campaigners in the Southern Oceans call on the combined power of business, love of nature and a clever pun on words to gain support to end whaling for good

Greenpeace?s campaign to stop whaling in the Southern Ocean has managed to stop Japanese ships from killing any whales for 13 days running, thanks to the work on the field (in the ocean, more like) of activists on board the Greenpeace Ship, the Esperanza.
Now the environmental group is calling on its supporters around the world to do their bit for the campaign. Whaling in the Southern seas will not stop unless there is a shift in Japanese political will. For months Greenpeace has been actively pushing for a change in public opinion ? their Whale Trail campaign even managed to make Japanese authorities pledge to spare humpbacks from this season?s massacre ? but today their campaign is targeted at reaching one man in particular, a man they believe has enough influence to make a difference.
Fujio Mitarai, CEO for one of the world?s best known camera companies, Canon, is also the head of the Japanese Business Federation ? since 1981 Canon have advertised their wares on the National Geographic every month, say Greenpeace Activists, so who better to take a stand against a practice that is so obviously endangering the world?s biodiversity? This is why the green (peaceful) warriors are today asking their supporters to sign and send a letter asking Mitarai to become the figure head of their anti-whaling protest.
