The Italian Public health Minister, Livia Turco and the President of the slow food association Carlo Petrini have formally agreed to a joint program called Earning Health that will promote healthy eating habits in hospitals as well as support local food production. The announcement was made online through Slow Food?s website. The main objective is to improve hospital food, both in terms of organisation and quality.
?International experiences have shown that healthy nutrition contributes greatly no only to the patient?s mental and physical health, but also to his perception of the quality of public health care. It is important to bring new practices into collective catering that take into account the different seasons and local production. This will not only serve to improve the health of patients, but will also have a positive impact on the local economy and the environment? says Slow Food on it?s website.
The formal agreement has been reached following an intense period of collaboration between the Public Health ministry, Slow Food and representatives of the Italian Society for Preventative Medicine that have prepared a three year action plan with objectives, activities and time frames.
