A German suburb named Vauban outside Freiburg has reported success in its innovative green friendly car-free scheme. The suburb, a form of idealistic experiment, was completed in 2006, and boasts an “almost car-free” environment. A high street accessible to all its citizens on foot has all the essential stores preventing inhabitants to have to take their car into town. Car users have to walk to the extremity of the suburb where a large garage mostly roofs vehicles part of sharing schemes. www.nytimes.com
