By the end of the greatest international fruit exhibition that took place Saturday the 10th in Berlin about 90 tons of fruit and vegetables were picked by the volunteers of Berliner Tafel association. Fruit and vegetable picked by about 200 volunteers was loaded on to 20 trucks and distributed to the disadvantaged people of Berlin. Last year the same association picked about 70 tons of fruit and vegetables. Berliner Tafel?s volunteers pick overproduction and unsold alimentary goods to distribute them to social structures in the Capital. Every day Berlin Tafel distributes fresh food directly to about 15000 people. A quarter of them are children and kids. This association was founded by the pedagogue Sabine Werth in 1993, and it is the first association in Germany that offers this type of service. From this experience other 650 canteens were created and grouped under the Bundesverband Deutsche Tafel federation. Thanks to these organisations and the help of 25.000 volunteers, about 500.000 people received food all over Germany. www.berliner-tafel.de
