According to Neno, the network of Estonian non profit organizations, the sector employs 28,000 people or 4-5% of the Estonian workforce. Salaried employees are more frequent in associations and foundations in the fields of activity of:

religion (88% hired employees),
agriculture (63%),
professional unions (58%),
health care (50%)
and education and science (49%).

Salaried employees are less frequent in organizations whose main objectives are:

community development (10%),
heritage conservation (17%),
preserving traditions (18%),
fishing and hunting (19%)
and sports (19%).

The existence of salaried employees is correlated to other variables indicating activity. For instance, the organizations that hired employees are more active in involving volunteers, and more willing to cooperate with different parties, such as other non-profit organizations, local governments, or businesses.
