Computing for the blind
A new web portal aims to make the internet more accessible to blind people in the Balkans
Many people are surprised when they learn that those who are blind or have impaired vision use computers and surf the internet. Unfortunately this list often includes internet professionals, web designers, developers and programmers and their ignorance or lack of awareness can make life harder for those who have trouble seeing.
Not everyone turns a blind eye to the problems of the blind. The best proof for that is Infoserveis365.net, the first information web portal in the Balkans specifically tailored to the needs of the blind.
The portal was presented last week at the Centre for Cultural and Media Decontamination in Sarajevo (located on the premises of the Student Radio), and has been exceptionally well accepted, judging from the reaction of the media and the general public. That impression is further augmented by the fact that, in the past four month since its launch, the website was visited by more than 36,000 visitors.
New assistive technologies allow blind people to do much more than before. These technologies, tools that allow people with impaired vision to work on computers, print text in Braille, read black print text, download material and listen to books.
