Arsenal raises half a million pounds for Teenage Cancer Trust

Arsenal Football Club‘s charity partnership with the Teenage Cancer Trust during the 2008/09 season raised £532,816 (approx. €620,000), well in excess of its £300,000 (€350,000 circa) target.
The total, which was revealed yesterday, is the most raised by Arsenal in the six years of its charity of the season initiative.
Money raised from the Be a Gooner. Be a Giver campaign will enable the charity to create a unit for young cancer patients in a new daycare cancer centre based at University College Hospital, London. Building work on the centre will begin in 2010.
A total of £210,000 (approx. €250,000) was raised in one day when first team players and directors donated a day’s wages to the cause. Supporters were encouraged to do likewise.
Other fundraising activities included a 10-lap fun run around the Emirates Stadium and a ball hosted at the Emirates Stadium by Little Britain star Matt Lucas.
Arsenal manager Arsène Wenger said: “The dedication of everyone involved with the charity has been phenomenal and all should be proud of the amazing delivery of fundraising initiatives the Teenage Cancer Trust has introduced to our supporters over the course of the partnership.”
Musician Roger Daltrey, patron of the Teenage Cancer Trust, said Arsenal’s support would enable the trust to “make a huge difference to many young people with cancer”.
The Great Ormond Street Hospital Children’s Charity is Arsenal’s new charity of the season.
