Individual Giving Conference

Individual giving by the general public is by far the largest source of charities’ income from donations. People give in many ways and through many routes, and a fundraisers’ skill is knowing which methods will yield the most in which circumstances.

This December’s first IoF Individual Giving Conference will bring these methods and skills together in one must-attend conference, with topics including Face to Face, Direct Marketing, CRM and Supporter Care.

Citizenship deprivation and the privilege to have rights

Citizenship, one of the bastions of state sovereignty, is being called into question by the emergence of the ‘homegrown’ terrorist. Although international treaties preclude a country from rendering a citizen stateless, recent legislative and executive action in the UK and Canada has raised the issue of whether these new regimes of citizenship revocation respect international and domestic law. In her presentation, Professor Macklin will discuss how the contemporary exercise of citizenship revocation has revised the arcane practice of exile and banishment, and recent instances of citizenship stripping as a way to convert the terrorist into a foreigner.

17th European Forum on Eco-innovation

Organised by DG Environment in the context of the Eco-innovation Action Plan, the biannual European Forum on Eco-innovation brings together around 200 specialists from the worlds of research, industry, policy, finance, civil society and business. Over two days, participants present the latest developments in their fields and engage in discussions on a specific theme. The Forum will examine employment opportunities and challenges arising from the transition to a green and circular economy. These will be presented through the lens of the stakeholders: worker associations, businesses, citizens and city authorities. This event is jointly organised by the European Commission’s Directorate General for Environment and the French Ministry for the Ecology, the Sustainable Development and Energy with the support of the Chamber of Commerce and Industry of Rhône-Alpes.

Renaturing Cities: Systemic Urban Governance for Social Cohesion

The EU Conference on "Renaturing Cities: Systemic Urban Governance for Social Cohesion", under the auspices of the Italian Presidency of the Council of the EU aims to to inspire Research and Innovation policies on sustainable urban development by bringing together scientists, policy makers, the business sector and representatives of the civil society. The conference will focus on multilevel governance for urban and peri-urban areas and highlight the relation between supranational, national and sub-national scales, as well as the interplay of actors within these scales. Therefore, new instruments of urban governance based on a strong public-private partnership will be explored in order to facilitate the interplay between policy-making, market-driven actions and grassroots initiatives.

iiAwards 

The International Innovation Awards is an International Innovation  start-up competition organized by Paris Région Lab. Each technology- based multi sector start-up from across the world is invited to participate. 

The iiAwardsParis is an extension of the Grands Prix de l’innovation (http://www.innovation-paris.com/site/home.html)  awarded by the City of Paris, a competition run by Paris Région Lab with the aim of rewarding those companies that will improve life in the city and develop the Parisian economic fabric. Paris Région Lab is an association backed by the City of Paris and the Ile-de-France region that plays a role fostering innovation in the Paris area through four key actions: Acting as an incubator for young, innovative companies; Testing innovative concepts; Organizing events for start-ups; Putting start-ups in touch with big business.

The 20 finalists will be invited to Paris to pitch to a jury of investors, recognized entrepreneurs, and mentors, and participate in a private session with the members of the Open Innovation Club, composed by 60 French big companies. All 20 startups will present their work during the Grands Prix de l’Innovation in a stand at the Forum organized by Paris Région Lab at the Cité de la Mode et du Design. The jury will select 6 start-ups who will have the possibility to join a start-up incubators in Paris for a 3-month programme, and make a final pitch at the iiAwards ceremony in Paris. The Winner will receive €20,000.

SIX Nordic Event 2014: Social Experiments

SIX Nordic, a Nordic network as part of the global organization SIX Global, targeted at all those working with and interested in social innovation organizes its annual event , which this time will be held in Copenhagen. 

SIX Nordic invites participants to join a conversation around the question: How can we make social experiments that lead to knowledge and systemic change in a Nordic context? 

The SIX Nordic Event 2014 follows a full-day conference hosted by Social+ on the same topic. 

What is a social experiment? 

A good social experiment is a well-planned, systematic test of a new solution to a social challenge, which provides us with valuable knowledge about how and if a new solution creates the expected social value. Good social experiments generate practice-oriented knowledge, show ethical consideration for the people involved, and balance between minimising risk and furthering innovation.

European Day of Persons with Disabilities Conference 2014

In this year's European Day of Persons with Disabilities Conference key issues of employment and accessibility will be discussed as well as the challenges ahead. People with disabilities, their representative organisations, EU policy makers, service providers, think tanks, trade unions and employers will participate in the panels. At the conference, the Commission will announce the winners of the Access City Award 2015, a competition that rewards cities’ efforts to ensure an accessible environment for all. The 2014 winner was the Swedish city of Göteborg, chosen from more than 100 European cities.

Towards a more effective Europe 2020

This major high-level event would be an important occasion for the EESC and national Economic and social councils, national governments, newly nominated European Commission and other opinion leaders to assess strategy's implementation and to discuss the role of the organised civil society during the 2015-2020 period.

The conference would be an opportunity to promote the important work that is being done in the Committee' and to bring the concrete propositions to the EU decision making level. An operational outcome of the conference could be a joint contribution of the EESC and the organised civil society on Europe 2020 in view of the new European Commission (in office from 1 November 2014).

Conference on Entrepreneurship, Innovation and Enterprise Dynamics

Entrepreneurship, innovation and enterprise dynamics are at the core of technology development and growth. Comparative evidence on key drivers, patterns and trends, as well as framework conditions, and the way these shape entrepreneurship, innovation and enterprise dynamics is critical for the design of effective policies in support of employment and inclusive economic growth.

The OECD Working Party on Industry Analysis (WPIA) is promoting the use of comparative firm-level evidence for policy making and is organising this conference in collaboration with Small Business Economics (SBE), the Journal of Technology Transfer (JTT) and the European Commission Joint Research Centre "Institute for Prospective Technological Studies" (JRC- IPTS) to gather comparative cross-country evidence about: new business venture formation; the role of framework conditions in fostering entrepreneurial activities; the determinants and outcomes of firms' innovative activities; business and innovation dynamics;  resource reallocation and growth; determinants and patterns of post-entry firm growth performance.

SROI Practitioner Training

With the Social Value Act now law, the growing importance for tangible evidence regarding social and environmental value is now a bigger issue than ever before, not just for organisations outwardly seeking to affect change in society but for any organisation or individual who wishes to be accountable for their work. 

The SROI Network will host a two days Practitoner Training. 

If you want to be more accountable and put stakeholders at the heart of your organisation, come on this Practitioner Training course to learn how to measure and manage your social value.

As a charity or social enterprise, a continual concern is how to improve the quality of service you provide your stakeholders – which areas need attention, which are working well etc. Combined with a pressure to spend money wisely, it can sometimes be difficult to see where to innovate in your organisation. Given the additional pressures of maintaining accountability and transparency to investors and board members, this can lead an organisation to rocky waters.SROI, or Social Return on Investment, can provide a solution. It is a methodology for measuring social value which engages with stakeholders and analyses your activities by prioritising what matters to the people who use your service. This information can then guide the future direction of an organisation, inform difficult decisions about where to invest resources to maximise social value and even act as an evaluative tool to highlight areas for improvement. A 2-day practitioner training provides a thorough overview of SROI from two main angles. The first day gives a practical, interactive, step-by-step introduction to the process of SROI via a case study that participants can bring along. The second day covers the more theoretical basis that underpins SROI, together with an exploration of issues that practitioners will need to demonstrate an understanding of if they wish to become accredited. All training is delivered by SROI Network accredited practitioners and is suitable for any experience level.

Facing adversity in the Muslim charity sector

Media criticism, financial regulation, constant investigation. The Muslim charity sector has rarely seen a week in recent months where its conduct and reputation has not been called into question. The closure of accounts by financial institutions and scrutiny by the press of the work of humanitarian organisations in difficult areas around the world is becoming commonplace and a challenge to respond to. That being said, the sector raises more than £200 million a year from a Muslim donor base that in the latest nationwide survey, was deemed to be the most charitable in the UK. Understanding the potential of this sector as well the challenges it faces is crucial to identifying common battles that face the humanitarian community as a whole.

On our plate today: healthy and sustainable food choices

On Thursday, 11 December, leading food, environment and health experts from the policy, civil society and business sector will come together to discuss the current trends in global and European food production and consumption and its effects on our health and environment and how best to achieve a more sustainable food system. Business, civil society and policymakers will debate about which actions are needed to encourage people to adopt a more healthy and sustainable diet. The event will close with a view on the existing EU policy framework  and on effective policies needed to address current and future nutritional challenges.This Conference is organised as part of the LiveWell for Low Impact Food in Europe (LIFE) project, which plays a key role in the European sustainable diets debate. The project looks at health, nutrition, carbon and affordability and demonstrates how low-carbon, healthy diets can help us achieve a reduction in greenhouse gas emissions from the EU food supply chain. It is funded with the contribution of the EU’s LIFE+ Programme for the Environment.

On 4 December 2000, the UN General Assembly, taking into account the large and increasing number of migrants in the world, proclaimed  18 December as International Migrants Day. On 18 December 1990, the General Assembly had adopted the International Convention on the Protection of the Rights of All Migrant Workers and Members of Their Families. UN Member States and intergovernmental and non-governmental organizations are invited to observe International Migrants Day through the dissemination of information on the human rights and fundamental freedoms of migrants, and through the sharing of experiences and the design of actions to ensure their protection.
