On 22 March World Water Day will be celebrated all around the world as a means of focusing attention on the importance of freshwater and advocating for the sustainable management of freshwater resources. The Day has been observed since 1993 when the United Nations General Assembly designated 22 March as World Day for Water, in light of the increase in demand for water access, allocation and services. Each year, the Day  highlights a specific aspect of freshwater. This year,  in reflection of the International Year of Water Cooperation, World Water Day is also dedicated to the theme of cooperation around water.
Cooperation is essential to strike a balance between the different needs and priorities and share this precious resource equitably. Since water cuts across all sectors, stakeholders that are not traditionally considered to be water managers must participate. Water cooperation between different social groups, economic sectors, regional governments, countries, and present and future generations, is crucial not only to ensure the sustainable and equitable use of water but also to create and maintain peaceful relations between people.
On the occasion of World Water Day, celebrations and events are taking place around the world to increase people’s awareness of water issues and improve the management of water resources. The  Official celebrations will be hosted  in The Hague, The Netherlands. A High-Level Interactive Dialogue of the 67th session of the UN General Assembly will also be convened at the UN head quarters in New York.
