What do nonprofit professionals expect from 2012? What are they excited about? And What do they fear? These are just some of the questions answered by the 2012 Nonprofit Communications Trends Report which has just been released by nonprofit communications expert Kivi Leroux Miller. Based ona survey that involved over 1200 participants in the U.S., the report aims at defining this year’s trends in the non-profit sector.

The slow economy still represents the biggest challenge to face, together with the need to adopt new communications  tools. As a matter of fact, gaining the supporters’ attention is getting increasingly difficult and the need to increase the effectiveness of the communications channels has never been greater. Having a good website was rated the most important communications tool for 2012, followed by e-mail marketing tools and Facebook. As a matter of fact Facebook was rated more important than print marketing and in-person events.

Although non profit professionals acknowledge the importance of effective communications, only 24 percent of the respondents have written and approved marketing plans for 2012, while the majority (59 percent) have written informal notes for themselves only, not formally approved by leadership.
