Coworking Europe 2011 conference

Although the co working movement is now more than 5 years old, 2011 seems like a year for takeoff. In Europe, co working spaces are mushrooming all over France, Italy, Belgium, Germany and Poland. After starting in major cities, coworking spaces are opening up in smaller towns, gathering communities of thousands of entrepreneurs, freelance workers and nomad employees.

The Coworking Europe 2011 conference has two main goals :

First, to analyse the boom of co working and its potential spill overs. Can co working boost entrepreneurship in Europe? Will co working help to disseminate mini Silicon Valleys all over European towns and cities ? How can co working spaces help innovators and startups to connect internationally ?

Secondly, the 2011 Co working Europe Conference aims to keep building the European co working community (following on from the good work done at the 2010 Brussels meeting). Co working space owners and co working catalysts will have the opportunity to share ideas, opinions, knowledge and best practices during the three days in Berlin.

Territories, laboratories for social Europe

Social innovation should be defined as: definition, design and implementation of creative and innovation  responses to social needs. The economic crisis, the new challenges faced by States and their territorial authorities, led the European Commission to propose a European strategy for smart, sustainable and inclusive growth where social innovation has its whole place. The communication entitled “innovation union” provides a major role to the social dimension in innovation. This meeting will aim at  better understanding the concept of social innovation, its realities, its outlines, its means, but also the transferability of experiments and the implementation of sustainable social policies. Social innovation might be view through the approach of the fight against poverty and exclusion recognized by the European Commission as one of the privileged areas of innovation. It could also be considered in different forms of research and development, observation or also social action.

Universal Children’s Day

By resolution 836(IX) of 14 December 1954, the General Assembly recommended that all countries institute a Universal Children’s Day, to be observed as a day of worldwide fraternity and understanding between children. It recommended that the Day was to be observed also as a day of activity devoted to promoting the ideals and objectives of the Charter and the welfare of the children of the world. The date 20 November, marks the day on which the Assembly adopted the Declaration of the Rights of the Child, in 1959, and the Convention on the Rights of the Child, in 1989.

In 2000 world leaders outlined the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) – which range from halving extreme poverty to halting the spread of HIV/AIDS and providing universal primary education, all by the target date of 2015. Though the Goals are for all humankind, they are primarily about children. UNICEF notes that six of the eight goals relate directly to children and meeting the last two will also make critical improvements in their lives.

Sharing Insight, Shaping Action: Funding and Measuring Social Innovation
This high profile event, which is being organized by Euclid Network on behalf of the Social Innovation Europe (SIE) consortium in partnership with the Gdynia Innovation Centre and SIX Europe consortium, will discuss the future of Social Innovation in Europe. Across the world, social innovators are confronting obstacles, succeeding, failing, and making a difference to social problems of all kinds. The diversity of social innovation is a major strength, but also a potential weakness – we must work to ensure that our finance tools are appropriate and that we can accurately assess and showcase what really works from a variety of social innovations, and what does not.  The Social Innovation Europe initiative and its partners are leading the way in addressing some of these issues, and we invite you to join us in doing so.

Seminar: Working Effectively with Volunteers

Volunteers are key to providing services for prisoners’ and offenders’ families and volunteering is an important part of government policy. This seminar will give practitioners and organisations ideas on how to work ethically, imaginatively and effectively with volunteers. Showcasing the work of shortlisted nominees for the Marsh Award for Voluntary Work with Prisoners’ Families, run in partnership with Action for Prisoners’ Families, it will look at the contribution of volunteers and how organisations can support them. It will also explore the wider context, asking what effect cuts to the statutory and not-for profit sector might have on providing the infrastructure for volunteers. The evening reception will provide an opportunity to network with colleagues and APF staff.

Eat Well to Live Well? The Impact of New Lifestyles and Eating Habits on Citizens’ Health

The way we live changes, and the way we eat too: stress, lack of sleep, lunch in 20 minutes, diner while watching TV, etc. The acceleration of time makes the convivial and social aspects related to food decline, and unhealthy eating habits and practices arise (“junk food”). In the meantime, diet-related diseases such as obesity have never been as highly developed in our societies as today.
What are the links between new lifestyles/eating habits and human health? Are the next generations of citizens condemned to widely suffer from diet-related diseases? Can Europe draw its own path to face the major challenge of combining new lifestyles with healthy food behaviours? To which extent should the measures implemented be global/trans-generational, or group-specific (the particular cases of children and the elderly will be addressed)?

Women’s activists have marked 25 November as a day against violence since 1981.
