Living in a foreign country is a unique experience
Educational internship: read Simona’s story
Simona Palumbo, 25, is a member of AIESEC – the world’s largest student driven organization. Last year she joined an AIESEC international internship and she is still attending it.
– What did you study? Which university did you attend? I graduated in International Communication at the University of Palermo in 2007 and then I was awarded a masters degree in International Relations (Political Science) at the University of Pisa in 2009.
– What kind of internship did you choose and why? I chose an educational internship because I loved its job description. It seemed to be a very interesting internship.
– Which country and which city did you go to? I chose to go to Istanbul, in Turkey, where I am still attending my internship.
– How long does your internship last? It started in February 2010 and it will end in June 2011.
– What is your internship about exactly? I came here to work at the Royal English College as an English teacher for managers. Now I am the Educational coordinator of the College.
– Five things you are learning during the internship? 1. I am learning how to work with people coming from every part of the world. 2. I am learning how to be a good teacher. 3. I am learning how beautiful, fascinating and colourful this country is. 4. I am learning Turkish, a beautiful language 5. I am learning that living in a foreign country is a unique experience that makes you grateful everyday and gives you infinite happiness.
– Why did you choose to go to Turkey in particular? Because I love Turkey. Working here was my biggest dream.
– What was the best moment of your experience? I had very good moments since I arrived in Turkey. The best moment was when I started feeling at home, talking with my Turkish friends, going out dancing with them.
– Would you change your experience in any way? I would not. Every day I say thanks for what I had.
– Any suggestions for students who are about to leave on an AIESEC internship? I would tell them to open their eyes wide, to be ready to learn and to meet new different people, to have fun, to discover, to catch everything in their host countries as not to miss any of the beautiful things that this experience will give them.
