Social Platform, the largest civil society alliance fighting for social justice and participatory democracy in Europe, is holding its annual conference in Brussels on November 4 and 5.

The goal of the conference this year is to establish a common foundation for care-giving that ensures the rights, responsibilities, dignity and empowerment of both receivers of care and givers of care and that strengthens social inclusion. The conference will also identify the main challenges and opportunities in receiving and providing care and examine what can be done to improve the existing foundations on which care is built, from a social, legislative, economic and financial point of view. Against the backdrop of the European Year for Combating Poverty and Social Exclusion, it is vital to consider how Care, provided effectively and with universal access to services, ensures social cohesion and inclusion

The conference will showcase a selection of innovative responses in care-giving practices and policies, arising from Social Platform members’ experiences. Experts from the network will give an overview of the main views of care givers, receivers and policy makers regarding care and how these demands can be met in terms of policies.

From the ground, Social Platform’s members, both from the European and the national level, will present examples of what can be done to overcome those challenges, like how to integrate the different needs of care receivers and givers, ensure a continuum between formal and informal care, guarantee universal access to care services.
