Despite an overall improvement in women’s health worldwide in the past 20 years, the Trends in Maternal Mortality report by the World Health Organisation highlights that regional inequalities continue to be an issue. In Asia, the number of maternal deaths is estimated to have dropped from 315,000 to 139,000 between 1990 and 2008. But Sub-Saharan Africa still accounts for 57% of all maternal deaths and in total 99% of mothers who die are in the Global South. www.who.int
