Sustainable Tourism 2010?

This conference is organised by the Wessex Institute of Technology.

Sustainable Tourism 2010 aims to find ways to protect the natural and cultural landscape through the development of new solutions which minimise the adverse effects of tourism. This can be achieved through the development of new strategies involving the active collaboration of society as a whole. Such solutions ought to cope with the continuous growth of tourism impacts on the country including culture and society.

This conference will explore issues concerned with achieving environmental, social and economic sustainability of tourism alongside the governance mechanisms needed to support sustainable tourism. The meeting will also focus on empirical work and case studies from around the world, which can offer new insights and best practice guidance.

Sustainable Tourism 2010 will take a broad view of the tourism industry, and will examine the practice of sustainable tourism from global travel trends through to destination and site management. Innovative solutions, including those involving ecological tourism are particularly welcome as well as cultural initiatives that will lead to better approaches to tourism with the objective of preserving the diversity of our planet.

Barriers to Wind Development in Romania: Meeting the Climate and Energy Challenges

This project is organised by Ewea.

The WINDBARRIERS project aims at gathering up to date and comprehensive information on the administrative and grid access barriers that obstruct the development of wind energy in Europe.

It will quantify lead times for projects installed in the last 12 months, both onshore and offshore, across EU 27. The data gathered covers inter alia the timeframe for getting the necessary permits, the costs linked to the process, the number of actions involved, the success and failure rate of the applications etc. The data is obtained from national wind energy associations, major utilities and project developers active in the EU.

The final publication (foreseen summer 2010) will be a toolkit for policy makers to reduce administrative and grid access barriers, at EU and national level. The recommendations will be disseminated by the consortium. This will be done through the organisation of workshops in 5 EU countries, out of which 3 in new Member States.

The CRC Energy Efficiency Summit

This summit is organised by Green Power Conferences.

The CRC Energy Efficiency Scheme (CRC) is the UK’s first mandatory energy savings and carbon trading scheme targeting emissions from public and private sector groups. Organisations with half-hourly metered electricity consumption greater than 6,000 MWh per year are included in this scheme which is designed to incentivize energy and carbon savings through reputational and financial drivers.

CRC participants that fail to reduce their energy consumption and carbon emissions are expected to face significant costs associated with the purchase of carbon allowances and potential financial penalties. They also risk serious reputational damage with the publication of the scheme’s annual league table comparing the carbon management performances of all participants.

Now in its fourth year, the CRC Energy Efficiency Summit has provided an important platform for stakeholders and policymakers to meet and discuss the development of this scheme. Now with the CRC’s launch, this event will offer participants practical advice updates and case studies to help manage the risks and maximize the opportunities associated with this complex and important legislation.

Reality Check: Are Common Agricultural Policy subsidies paying for environmental quality?

At this event, organised by BirdLife‘s European Divison (ED), BirdLife will present the results of a report on the CAP reform and its political implications.

On 26 June 2003, EU farm ministers adopted a fundamental reform of the Common Agricultural Policy (CAP). The reform will completely change the way the EU supports its farm sector.

Key elements of the reformed CAP are:

– A single farm payment for EU farmers, independent from production; limited coupled elements may be maintained to avoid abandonment of production,

– This payment will be linked to the respect of environmental, food safety, animal and plant health and animal welfare standards, as well as the requirement to keep all farmland in good agricultural and environmental condition (“cross-compliance”),

The CAP reform debate has started in earnest in the EU and as it progresses, more and more questions are being raised around the costs and benefits of the current policy. Why do farmers get this money? How much do they get and what is it really delivering? These key questions prompted BirdLife International to produce this report, using newly released data on CAP payments, to identify the relationship between CAP subsidies and environmental quality.

Waste Management 2010

The International Conference on Waste Management and the Environment, this year at its fifth edition, is organised every two years by the Wessex Institute of Technology in collaboration with other institutions. ??Waste Management is becoming one of the key problems of the modern world, an international issue that is intensified by the volume and complexity of domestic and industrial waste discarded by society. Unfortunately, many of the practices adopted in the past were aimed at short-term solutions without sufficient regard or knowledge for long-term implications on health, the environment or sustainability and this, in many cases, is leading to the need to take difficult and expensive remedial action.

With growing awareness of the detrimental environmental effects of current waste disposal, there is a significant onus of accountability for effective waste management. Better practice and safer solutions are required. Not only is there a need for more research on current disposal methods such as landfill, incineration, chemical and effluent treatment, but also on recycling, waste minimisation, clean technologies, waste monitoring, public and corporate awareness, and general education.
