Denmark: aid to development

di Staff

The Organization for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD) published data valid for 2008 that show that the Net Official Development Assistance (ODA) in Denmark amounts to 2,800 million $ (approximately million €, at the current exchange rate), that is:  0.82 % of the GNI (in 2007, figures were approximately the same: 0.81 %, corresponding to approximately 2,562 million $; source: OECD, 30th March 2009).

The Danish ODA/GNI ratio effort is above the 2008 0.47% average for all the DAC countries; Sweden and Luxembourg lead the way, respectively with 0.98% and 0.92% of GNI destined to ODA. Japan and the United States have the lowest ODA/GNI ratio: 0.18%, whereas, in Europe, Greece and Italy deliver just a 0.20% of the GNI to the Official Development Assistance (Sources: OECD, 30th March 2009).

Denmark is 13th among the DAC countries as far as the net volume of the ODA is concerned; it is instead 4th considering the ODA/GNI ratio (source: OECD, 30th March 2009).

Considering gross bilateral ODA, according to the OECD – DAC (see figure on the left, under attachment) the countries that receive the most from Denmark are Uganda, Tanzania und Nigeria, with 95, 93 and 92 million $ respectively (approximately 63-61 million €), followed by Mozambique (with 82 million $, circa 54.6 million €). Last in the Denmark top-10 of recipients is Bangladesh with 44 million $ (about 29.3 million €), shortly preceded by Zambia, Kenya and Egypt, with less than 50 million $ each (source: OECD – DAC, 2006-07 average; www.oecd.org/dac/stats).
