Anti-Nationalist Appeal

CIVIL NGO for the social integration of different ethnic communities in Macedonia

di Oneworld Southeast Europe

On the occasion of the start of the school year, CIVIL NGO appealed yesterday to the Government and competent authorities and institutions to take urgent measures for social integration, mutual understanding and cohesion of different ethnic communities in Macedonia.

“Schools are turned into ethnic bunkers and nests of hatred, tensions and violence. Places created for education and cultivation of children and youth, now are arenas for national-chauvinist and criminal reckoning. That is Macedonia today”, CIVIL says in its appeal, condemning the attempts of national-chauvinists to poison the first day of school with the evil of division and hatred.

„ With no awareness about the damage they cause to those they call their dearest, many members of this society missed the opportunity to manifest maturity and dignity today”, comments CIVIL.

Repeating that the interethnic relations in the schools are in a very bad state, CIVIL warns those who seem to be living in the past to be aware that they cause irrevocable damage to Macedonian society today. The organization also notes that it is important to warn and isolate those who see national-chauvinism as opportunity for political and financial profiteering.

CIVIL appeals to the parents to eliminate nationalism from the meal they give to their children before sending them to school and to the teachers to take initiatives that will allow the children to express their creativity and overcome intolerance, chauvinism and violence.

„ That ought to be done urgently in order to prevent ethnic hatred during the classes, but also after the official hours, in order to catch up with what they have missed by now”, demands CIVIL and appealed to editors and journalists to find people, on this first day of school, who will offer constructive and sustainable solutions to overcome the ethnic hatred in the country.
