You have four more days to nominate an individual or organisation for the 2009 Nansen Refugee Award.  If you think you know of a worthwhile cause/person that deserves the money and recognition, click here, and complete the form.

Formerly known as the Nansen Medal, the Award is named after the Norwegian arctic explorer Fridtjof Nansen, who was appointed in 1921 by the UN’s predecessor, the League of Nations, to be the very first High Commissioner for Refugees. The Award, consisting of a medal and a US$100,000 monetary prize, is given out yearly to a person or group for outstanding services in supporting refugee causes.

Last year’s winners were Christopher Clark, the British coordinator of the UN Mine Action Coordination Centre-South Lebanon (UNMACC-SL), and his staff of nearly 1,000 international and Lebanese civilian mine clearers, including women.

The Nansen Selection Committee said that it had chosen Clark and the team for their outstanding contribution to the safety and security of internally displaced people and returnees in Lebanon, as well as humanitarian workers.
