In June 2009 around 375 million people will vote in the European Parliamentary elections in the world’s largest democratic elections ever. But on March 5 many disabled and elderly Poles have lost their right to have a say: their President failed to sign the electoral amendment that was to enable those who could not make it ? because disabled or over the age of 75 ? to the polling booths from assigning a delegate to vote for them. Why? Apparently because elections should be direct in order to avoid abuses. Local civil society is enraged, claiming that the right to vote is a fundamental civic right. www.vitaeurope.org
