paring knives and potato peelers, the Vienna Vegetable Orchestra will
kick off the campaign for the European Year of Creativity and Innovation
2009 with a concert in Brussels!
Ján Figel’, European Commissioner for Education, Training, Culture
and Youth, kindly invites everyone to join him for this unique performance,
marking the opening of the European Year 2009 – a Year with boundless
imagination, a Year showcasing creativity and encouraging innovation
throughout Europe. The inaugural event at the Théâtre Molière will feature the offi cial handover between the European Year 2008 to 2009 and a concert by the Vienna Vegetable Orchestra, an extraordinary example of European creativity, performing their music on instruments solely made out of
vegetables. Playing on carrot fl utes, pumpkin basses, leek violins and
celery bongos, the musicians create funky melodies and exceptional
listening experiences for their audience.

In 2008, the EU celebrated the European Year of Intercultural Dialogue,
highlighting the benefits of diversity and dialogue in multicultural Europe.
2009 has been designated as the Year of Creativity and Innovation,
encouraging us to fully explore these traits in our personal lives, communities

and innovation contribute to the economic prosperity of Europe and the
richness of our wellbeing as individuals and a society.
The concert will be followed by a reception with fl ying buffet and drinks.
