The number of people volunteering formally in England is estimated at 17.9million (once a year) and 11.6million once a month in 2005 as the NCVO referes.

The 17.9million people who volunteered formally at least once a year gave on average the equivalent of 108 hours each. This equals 3 working weeks each. An estimated 1.2million full time workers would be needed to replace these volunteers at a cost of over £27.5 billion.

– 29% volunteer at least once a month;
– 45% volunteer at least once a year;
– 31% of people volunteering at least once a month are women;
– 27% of people volunteering at least once a month are men.
