Who ever said that Facebook was just a way of keeping in touch with your buddies? NGOs are all jumping onto the social networking bandwagon in a big way these days ? fundraising, campaigning and keeping in touch with their members. Like WWF, who is advertising its Earth Hour campaign through Facebook, where word spreads from one face to another with the click of a mouse.

What is Earth Hour? A campaign to turn off the world?s lights, TV?s, dishwashers, pc?s and all things electric for an hour on March 29th 2008. The campaign follows the success of Earth Hour Australia 2007, where 2.2 million people adhered to the campaign saving the equivalent amount of CO2 as taking 48 thousand cars off the roads for an hour. This year the environmental NGO is setting its goals higher and aims to make Earth hour a global event.

What is really surprising, however, is that more than 1 million people have already shown an interest on Facebook, and 300 thousand have confirmed that they will be participating. And there are still 53 days to go till Earth Hour.
