USA: Green computing initiative

The Climate Savers Computing Initiative, promoted by Google and Intel in the spirit of WWF’s Climate Savers program, has launched its new website packed full of best green practices

The Climate Savers Computing Initiative, a nonprofit group of eco-conscious consumers, businesses and conservation organizations, has launched its newly redesigned website: now easier to navigate and with new featured new content, including a fun and interactive quiz about greener computing practices.

The Initiative was started in the spirit of WWF?s Climate Savers program which in the U.S.A has mobilized over a dozen companies since 1999 to cut carbon dioxide emissions, demonstrating that reducing emissions is good business. The results of the quiz, meant to survey how green the public?s computing practices are, show that 47% of the 1,000 participants, already use computer power management, and another 47 percent plan to begin using it, and forty-two percent of respondents already use ENERGY STAR qualified computer. Phantom power practices ? which simply means unplugging electronic devices when they are not in use ? are, on the other hand only taken up by 32% of respondents, perhaps because few people know that they can save up to 10% on their electricity bill by cutting phantom power.

Since 2007, the Climate Savers Computing Initiative, which was started by Google and Intel, has been working towards reducing global CO2 emissions from the operation of computers by 54 million tons per year, equivalent to the annual output of 11 million cars or 10?20 coal-fired power plants. This effort is expected to lead to a 50% reduction in power consumption by computers by 2010, and committed participants could collectively save $5.5 billion in energy costs.
