Pro-peace NGO Saferworld has published a series of reports analysing arms transfer controls in the European neighbourhood. Measuring up? Arms transfer controls in Serbia is the last of the series to be published and it assesses how the arms transfer system in Serbia measures up to current EU and international standards and best practice. The report also reviews the existing legislative framework governing arms transfers in Serbia, and assesses the Serbian authorities? capacity and willingness to meet their commitments.
The EU is in a position to influence the countries of the Western Balkans, where its assistance is much needed to address these problems. However, it has yet to elaborate a coherent outreach strategy that prioritises those countries most in need of assistance. As well as providing concrete recommendations to national governments, these surveys provide a sound analysis around which the EU can develop a strategy of support.
Reports are available for the Republic of Serbia, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Croatia, United Nations Administered Province of Kosovo and can be downloaded from the Safer World website.
