Without public funds most Spanish non profit organisations would not survive. This is the result of a recent report about the financial sustainability of the third sector in Spain.
Associative fees and returns on services alone do not provide enough to cover running costs, making NGOs and associations dependent on external funding to carry out their social mission.
In the last few years the average number of non profit organisations to open each year has been more than 10 thousand, due to an more active civil society and the availability of public finances. In light of the recent cutbacks to EU funds destined for Spain more and more organisations must compete in the calls for proposals, suggesting that a new financial model is required.
