UK: Free computer software for blind people
For the first time new talking computer software is being made available free of charge to blind people by a small social firm in the UK
The company, called Screenreader.net, is run by blind couple Margaret and Roger Wilson-Hinds from their home in Peterborough, UK, as part of their commitment to enabling other blind and visually impaired people worldwide to enjoy computers. The new software, called Thunder, gives blind-friendly speech access to Microsoft Word, Outlook Express and the Internet. It is easy to use and has no known conflicts with other screenreaders. On a modern Windows XP computer with speaker or headphones, blind-friendly speech will be available within 2 or 3 minutes of downloading or installing the software. Thunder is entirely free to individuals, with multi-user packages available to organisations for an annual subscription that also includes training. It is through the multi-licences and training of partner organisations that Screenreader.net will generate its enterprise income stream. The product has already received the backing of a number of organisations including the National Blind Children?s Society, the Royal Blind Society and New Zealand Association For The Blind.
