Ukraine: HIV/AIDS Alliance looks for partners

Around 1% of people in Ukraine are living with HIV/AIDS. The British NGO HIV/AIDS Aliance Ukraine is looking for new partners in order to reinforce the national response and reduce the AIDS mortality

di Stefanie Schiffer

Around 1% of people in Ukraine are living with HIV/AIDS, the highest prevalence of HIV among adults aged 15-49 in Eastern Europe and the Commonwealth of Independent States. Injecting drug use remains the primary source of HIV transmission – 72% of reported cases among adults. But there are increasing numbers of cases among the heterosexual partners of injecting drug users and among children. In March 2004, the British NGO HIV/AIDS Alliance became the temporary ‘principal recipient’ of the Global Fund in Ukraine, with responsibility to administer funds for the Global Fund programme, ‘Overcoming the HIV/AIDS Epidemic in Ukraine’. The programme’s aim is to substantially reinforce the national response, reduce HIV incidence and morbidity rates, and reduce the AIDS mortality rate. In May 2006 the HIV/AIDS Alliance continues an open call for proposals “Involvement of new partners into overcoming HIV/AIDS epidemic”.
