Spain: employment in social economy

Social economy in Spain accounts for more than 10& of total employment.

¨???yearbook edited by CEPES (?Confederación Empresarial Española de la Economía Social?) has revealed that social economy is present in Spain in all economic sectors with a turnover exceeding 87 million Euro in 2004. In this year, social economy employed 2,257,987 people, who account for more than 10% of total employment. This figure includes workers in co-operatives (308,308) and in labour societies (116,852), workers in integration processes (1,640), disabled workers (38,357), self-employed workers (549,918), farmers and stockbreeders who are co-operative members (932,124) and salaried workers in other third sector enterprises (310,287). Around 400,000 of these jobs were created in 2004. As for the number of social economy enterprises, its number in 2004 amounted to 45,800, among which its is particularly remarkable the increase in the number of integration enterprises and special employment centres. According to another source, the Spanish Ministry of Labour and Social Affairs, women account for a third of all the employees in co-operatives and labour societies, while in terms of age nearly 60% of them are under 40 years old. Since 2003, the weight of migrant workers, who now amount to 8% of all workers in co-operatives and labour societies, has increased by more than 1,5%. www.cepes.es
