Spain: Gipuzkoa will close its rubbish dump

The Diputación of Gipuzkoa (a supra-municipal unit) and the nine town councils (304,370 inhabitants) affected by the closure of this rubbish dump will have until 2009 to agree on the system they will use to eliminate the rubbish generated in the area. Although one of the mayors has denied that this rubbish dump is having effects on public health, demonstrations have been made to protest against bad smell. In addition to the future closure of the rubbish dump, another positive outcome is that in 2005 the amount of rubbish decreased for the first time ever from 483 kilos to 466 kilos per person. www.gipuzkoa.net
