UK: Acevo critices Local Governments behaviours towards charities

The New Local Government Network annual conference has housed the debate on third sector leaders and local authorities relations and ties

Speaking at the New Local Government Network (NLGN) Stephen Bubb, Acevo chief executive, launched an assault on the managers gathered at the meeting. In his speech he pointed out the short-term contracts offered by city councils, claiming that 90% were for only one year. ?This has forces charities to fire their workers because they late noticed the grant renewal? Bubb said. ?Our relation would be better described referring to patronage instead of partnership?. Another issue which the conference focused on was the allegations that large charities were taking away all the council contracts, to their smaller counterparts?s disadvantage. ?There are good examples of large charities, such as NCH and Barnado?s, working with small local charities? Bubb added. Among the speakers taking part to the meeting, Neil Bentley, director of public services policy at the Confederation of British Industry, asserted that to improve quality of local services competitive market it requires to strengthen competitive market, being conscious that achieving effective reform will radically change the way all sectors deliver. www.nlgn.co.uk www.thirdsector.co.uk
