Latvia: shortage of labour force may hamper EU funds

Massive labour migration to Ireland and UK is slowing down the sectors of trade and service

Latvia might have difficulties to spend the allotted amount of the EU structural funds due to increasing labour force shortage in the country. In accordance to the provisional research the avarage increase of salary has been around 25 per cent during the last year. From the other hand massive labour migration continues to Ireland and UK and has led to the situation that there is no emploees in the sectors of trade and service. A number of large local companies argue that national measures should be taken to solve the issue. The Office for Citizenship and Migration Affairs has to develop a new migration policy till the end of December. The new policy should be based on the actual situation in the labour market, possibilities to deal with labour shortage through introduction of new technologies. More info at www.em.gov.lv
