Geneva, in association with the Cities of Barcelona, Lyon and Saint-Denis — each of who was a former host of a conference — is this year’s conference organizer. It is an opportunity to highlight the challenges faced by municipalities and their commitments in addressing these.

Written in 1998, on the 50th anniversary of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, the Charter brings together hundreds of municipalities around guidelines for municipal activities in human rights.

Since 1998, hundreds of European cities have been confronted with issues related to human rights and, for this reason, signed the European Charter.
Elected officials, representatives of local associations, academicians and civil society are expected to participate in the conference.

The overall theme chosen for the 6th edition of the conference is “Human Rights: Concrete commitments of cities” As for thematic round tables, they will address issues related to housing, social inclusion, migrants/minorities and international solidarity.

Dozens of mayors are expected, as well as international experts and representatives of international organizations and NGOs, media and academia. Mrs. Calmy-Rey, Swiss Minister of Foreign Affairs, has also confirmed her participation.
